The Sun Does Shine, How I found Life and Freedom on Death Row, is a powerful personal account from Anthony ‘Ray’ Hinton. Ray was on death row in the Alabama Judicial system for nearly 30 years, for a crime he didn’t commit. No one goes through life believing that their life is going to change drastically with no warning. I’m sure Ray was just like any one of us, believing that he was in control of his own life.
Who is in control
Ray was arrested based on false testimony for a crime he did not commit. Furthermore, he was then convicted with evidence taken from his home that later would prove his innocence. The attorneys that defended him were not helpful until Bryan Stevenson relentlessly worked the judicial system to free Mr. Hinton. Ray was not in control of his life. It’s a reminder to me, that we are not in control of our lives either. God is the only one in control of our lives. Ultimately, God brings light in our lives.
Light in the darkness
30 years in a jail cell is unimaginable for me. My only comparison is life on a submarine. Some of the mannerisms such as: different mealtimes, bad sleeping habits, repetitive schedule, and difficult adjustment to normal life are relatable to submarine life. However, my experience was only 5 years and was not prison. To find light in that darkness, reminds me to enjoy every breath of fresh air. Enjoy the car rides. Remember all my family and friends. What is your light in the darkness? What are you thankful for?
Forgiveness and thanks
I have heard it said, we all use the same amount of time. Each moment that comes and goes is precious. Because, life is precious. Life is a gift from God, not to be wasted. Regardless of what happens to you, life is happening… now. Mr. Hinton has a great quote in his book, “I forgive because I have a God who forgives.” Who do I need to forgive and what can I give thanks to God for today?
The Sun Does Shine Summary
Highly recommended. The chapters are short and easy to digest. The content is full of insight from court documents to personal testimony. Mr. Hinton makes his case that the death penalty should be abolished. He says no person has the right to take human life. Only God can take and give life.
